Today I've decided on writing a short review on an animation that I've been following for over two years now and that never fails to amaze me with it's beautiful graphics and subtle humor.
Simon's Cat is a drawn feline character, that appeared at first in a frame to frame animated, online video called 'Cat Man Do' in March 2008. Ever since there have been many more short films but also comic-books and other merchandise depicting this charming cat's mischievous life.

Simon Tofield's artwork is easily recognized thanks to it's sketchy, somewhat minimalistic appearance. The drawings show steady lines, giving life to the characters by using playful contours and a few, well positioned hatches. When you look through the Simon's Cat books, you will find that every episode of this white cat's life is depicted using slightly different layouts every time. Unlike in the animation, where the format is recurrent, the books show a great variety of comic-book storytelling methods. Some episodes have only two illustrations, others have six, or ten. Some are one-shots depicted on an entire page.
This somewhat unusual way of narrating is quite fitting for Tofield's reality-inspired, spontaneously concocted stories, I find. Because sometimes you're rapidly going through a dynamic sequence, while sometimes you stop and analyze a whole picture, enjoying every detail. It's somewhat hectic but every now and then there's a pause in order for you to enjoy a scene. It's like everyday life but funnier!
Simon's Cat and Simon's Cat in Kitten Chaos are two out of four already published books by Simon Tofield:
The books make grate gifts! Be it for children or comic or cat-loving adults. And the animation is right here on YouTube, free to put a smile on your face every day! Enjoy!
